Research before you go in
Your prep
0 / 8
1.
Pick your exact make, model, and trim before you go. "I want to look around" hands control to the salesperson.
2.
Look up the invoice price online — for example, Edmunds & KBB — and screenshot it.
3.
Check the manufacturer's website for current cash-back offers and incentives.
4.
If you're financing, get pre-approved for a loan at your own bank or credit union first.
5.
Look up the average APR for your credit score. If you know the going rate for your credit tier ahead of time, you can immediately tell if a dealer's financing offer is inflated.
6.
If you have a trade-in, get offers from CarMax and Carvana before you go. Never mention a trade-in until after you've agreed on the new car price.
7.
Calculate your target out-the-door number, so you walk in with a specific figure — not a feeling.
8.
Time your visit strategically. End of month, end of quarter, or end of year — dealers are more motivated to hit quotas and more willing to move on price.
