Check your oil level
Before you start — what's going on with your oil?
Your engine oil has two jobs: keeping moving parts from grinding against each other, and pulling heat away from the engine. Over time it degrades into a thick, dark sludge that blocks oil passages and accelerates wear — even when the dipstick shows a full level. That's why the level alone doesn't tell the whole story. Color matters just as much.
Adding oil buys you time — but it is no replacement for an actual oil change.
Signs your oil might be low:
🔴 Oil pressure warning light — Take this seriously. By the time this light comes on, your engine is already in trouble. Pull over and check before going anywhere.
🔊 Knocking or ticking from the engine — Particularly when you first start the car. Metal parts are making contact they shouldn't be.
👃 Smell of burning oil — Oil is likely dripping onto a hot surface somewhere in the engine bay.
💨 Blue or gray smoke from the exhaust — Your engine is burning oil internally. This needs attention.
🐢 Sluggish acceleration or worse fuel economy — Low oil levels put extra strain on your engine and you'll feel it.
When adding oil makes sense:
✅ Your dipstick reads just under the MIN mark — and you're not overdue for a change yet.
✅ The oil on the dipstick looks amber or dark brown — it hasn't broken down, there's just less of it.
✅ You know the right oil grade for your car — it's on the oil cap or in your owner's manual.
When adding oil won't cut it:
⚠️ The level keeps dropping — A fast drop means a leak somewhere. Filling it back up is a temporary patch, not a fix. Head to a shop.
⚠️ The oil is black, thick, or gritty — That oil is past its useful life. Fresh oil on top of degraded oil doesn't restore protection — it just dilutes the problem.
⚠️ You're not sure what's already in there — Different oil types and viscosities don't always mix well. Confirm what your car takes before adding anything.
⚠️ The dipstick already reads at or above MAX — More is not better. Overfilling puts pressure on engine seals and can cause real damage.
Park on level ground
Uneven ground gives a false dipstick reading. Let the engine cool for 5–10 minutes after driving.
