How to get a second opinion without drama
This applies once a shop has already given you an estimate — whether over the phone or in person — and you're not sure whether to trust it. If you're just calling around beforehand to compare prices, you don't need this — just ask what they charge.
Pause and ask for it in writing
When you have an estimate you're unsure about, say exactly:
"Thank you — I need to think about this overnight before I authorize anything. Can I get a copy of the written estimate?"
They must give it to you. Take it and leave. It's normal to feel awkward walking out after they've already looked at your car — but this is a completely routine request, and reputable shops hear it constantly. You don't owe them more explanation than the script above. Take the estimate, thank them, and go. If a shop gives you attitude for asking, that tells you something too.
Take it to one independent shop
Not another chain. Hand them the estimate and say:
"I got this estimate. Can you tell me if this sounds right and what you would charge?"
An honest second shop will tell you straight whether the work and the price match.
You don't owe the first shop anything
No explanation. No follow-up call. No guilt about taking the work elsewhere. Your money, your car, your decision.
"I appreciate the information. I will be in touch."
No apology. No elaboration. Full stop.
